Day 7: Point Judith to Wickford, RI
September 2, 2000
Another Foggy Morning
The start of the final day was again foggy. I waited for some time in the
hopes it would lessen as the day progessed, but it stayed very thick. I
only needed to round the corner of Point Judith and run a fairly straight
course up Narragansett Bay to Wickford. The only real problem would be to
find the turning point to Wickford.
It was at least warm out. I spent some morning time watching fish, probably
scup or porgies playing about the engine of my boat. The water was very
clear and I was tempted to go for a swim but held off. Time to get going.
I found my way out the harbor breakwater and then simply hugged the shore,
which I could see perhaps 100-200 yards away. Occassionally a sport or
commercial fishing boat would come out of the fog, then disappear into it.
But the lightness of the day gradually increased.
Homeward Run up Narragansett Bay
I was finally able to make out landmarks fairly far ahead, and the fog turned
to more of a haze. Whale Rock looks like a submarine conning tower in the
distance and is said to look like a sperm whale. The Jamestown Bridge connects
Kingston and Jamestown on Connanicutt Island in the middle of the Bay. After the
bridge, I could actually see far enough to discern my turning point and swing
westward towards Wickford. Through the outer harbor jetty and onward past the
yaught club and marina to the inner harbor and boat ramp. Tie up at the dock
and load the boat on the truck.
I had just managed to get the boat up on the trailer, out of the water and
packed away when the skies opened up with a deluge of rain. Thunder and lightning
added to the confusion. I had just beat the storm and was on the road for the
3 1/2 hour drive home.
